On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
