Zohran Mamdani affirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key issue, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.
"My choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
In his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
