What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
