The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
