The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—the creative team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
