Over 42 million Americans are anxiously awaiting to learn if the Trump administration will use contingency money to provide billions of dollars in nutritional support.

Federal courts issued the White House until Monday at 12:00 EST (5:00 PM GMT) to provide details about how it intends to pay for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food assistance.

Financial support for the program remains in limbo due to the extended US government shutdown resulting from the inability of lawmakers to agree on a budget agreement.

Regardless of the judges' ruling or alternative solution, millions Americans have been deprived of critical food assistance since money for the program expired on Saturday.

Local Management and Government Money

While individual US states manage the assistance, the programme depends on funds from the national administration, which has been without budget and closed since 1 October.

Courts in Massachusetts and Rhode Island ruled that the US Department of Agriculture needs to employ $5.25bn (four billion pounds) in reserve money to provide some funding to Americans on Snap.

The program requires about eight billion dollars per month.

Legal Challenges and Administration Reaction

US President Donald Trump previously said he had directed administration attorneys to inquire with the courts how the administration could lawfully fund Snap, adding: "Even if we get prompt direction, it will unfortunately be postponed."

On Sunday, the Treasury Secretary said in a television appearance that the commander-in-chief wanted to receive guidance from the judiciary about how to reallocate funds lawfully to fund Snap payments but they could be distributed as early as Wednesday.

"A procedure exists that must be adhered to," Bessent said. "So, we've got to determine what the method is."

Late last month, the Department of Agriculture said it will not distribute food assistance funds starting 01 November because of the government shutdown, saying: "The well has run dry."

Legal Actions and State Responses

Numerous states and the Washington DC filed suit against the government over the assistance suspension and argued that they have a statutory duty to keep the program running in their jurisdictions.

Additionally, municipalities and non-profits also initiated legal action.

Amid doubts surrounding government nutrition money, several states said they would employ their own money to fund Snap benefits.
