Rory McIlroy hails Sports Personality triumph with double accolades.
Just prior to his name was called, a nervous thought raced through his mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star once more."
"It's been a tremendous night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Our game was celebrated in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and perhaps we can build upon that."
On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The verdict was uncontested, allowing a delighted McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were named the top squad.
A Whirlwind Schedule
Choosing not to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already plotting his upcoming event. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to Miami.
"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."
Unfinished Business
Nevertheless, McIlroy insisted he has no desire to slow down, notwithstanding securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.
"Further big titles, season-long rankings, international events, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep progressing and have the desire, that's the key."
Squad Celebration
Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his great friend's individual success.
"They are the memories that will stay with us indefinitely so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is truly special," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory pick that up, I think he is so worthy so much."
When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood smiled before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"
Next Targets
He is aiming to at last capture his maiden major next year but he understands McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.
Football Loyalty
As he was leaving, a last query arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?
"If they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a hint of hope around."
Following a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that the champion golfer is seeing the bright side.
