NY Launches Online Platform for Citizens to Share ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has introduced a fresh digital platform encouraging locals to submit visual evidence of ICE operations across New York. This action follows a day after a major ICE raid shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering large-scale outcry.

American Citizens Held During ICE Operation

A US congressman disclosed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were taken into custody and detained for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Rallies occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Every New Yorker is entitled to live without fear," the AG wrote in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and captured ICE activity yesterday, I ask you to provide that material with us. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and investigating any violations of law."

Submission Process

The platform includes fields to send visual evidence of the operation, plus a area to specify where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must tick a checkbox that confirms that "authorities may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, such as in a legal proceeding or government document."

Details of the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which onlookers say involved over fifty ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known area of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and additional items are commonly traded in large quantities – frequently to tourists.

Videos of the incident depict several hooded and equipped personnel zip-tying and detaining a person, and forcing aside witnesses. Crowds of residents followed the agents along the roads. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the urban roads.

Leadership Statements

During a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be detained for unjustly." He noted the persons were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman stated. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the military to halt unrest that they themselves caused."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the immigration operation quickly spread – every political contenders criticized the operation, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate stated.

New York City immigrant rights groups expressed outrage as well.

"ICE descended on the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and riot gear to target local sellers trying to make a living. This action had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," stated the leader of a advocacy group.

ICE Policies

Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has said it will not apprehend US citizens. Nevertheless, external research has revealed that more than 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the present government.

Current Situation

Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in NY and around the country this year.

A recent action in central NYC was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations opposing ICE are ubiquitous as are claims of violence and abusive practices.

Recently, a document submitted by civil rights groups stated healthcare failures of women with child in detention centers.
