New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
