England to Launch the European Championship 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated entry for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an England men’s game since May 2016, when the visitors were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, should they win the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.

Championship Kickoff and Rally

The event was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were heckled as they entered the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were held up with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Timeline

The opening game of the European Championship will be staged at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will feature the Dragons if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5:00 PM.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help reach a broader range of fans.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.

The national sides of all four hosts will enter the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through that route.

Stadiums and Knockout Stage

Villa Park and The North London arena complete the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarterfinal matches staged at every host’s main arena.

The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a tournament for the fans and a showcase of everything we love about the game – its passion and capacity to foster unity.”

Over 3 million admissions, a record for a men’s European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to fans.
