Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be detained and punished "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The clip, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly acted in defense or security positions.
"As we did, you all took an vow to protect and support this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to execute commands that violate the statutes or our founding principles."
The Former President's Incensed Reaction
The clip seemed to provoke a heated reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined statement censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky calls for execution against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical online messages and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
Officials' Firm Reaction
The representatives who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We are former service members and security experts who love this nation and took an pledge to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that important obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must unite and denounce the president's requests for our execution and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government telling troops to ignore directives, I think that is unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in casualties, it can result in chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
