Beijing Slams US of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Over Trade Levy Warning

Trump’s newest warning to introduce an additional 100% tariff on products from China has been labeled a “classic case” of United States’ contradictory behavior, according to the Chinese government.

A representative of the ministry also stated that China could enact its own unrevealed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant executes his pledge, noting that the country was “not afraid” of a looming commercial battle.

On Friday, Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to reinforce its rules for exports of critical elements, accusing Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “captive”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a arranged talks with China’s President Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in South Korea before the month ends.

The former president’s remarks on Friday unsettled financial markets, with the benchmark US stock index falling by nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since April.

The president’s words renewed apprehensions of a trade war between the United States and China.

This past spring, the respective governments had consented to eliminate high import duties on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the economic powers.

Consequently, United States levies on Chinese imports subject to an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the start of the year, while American products entering China incur a 10% tariff.

The most recent comments from China – published by the Commerce Ministry in the form of official answers to journalist’s questions – reflected terminology from the peak of the ongoing trade dispute.

They criticised US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while supporting the country’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to ensure state interests and that of all nations.

The spokesperson stated that for “an extended period”, the America had “broadened the definition” of national security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “enforced” unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Using” import duty warnings is not the proper method to deal with the Chinese government,” the spokesperson commented.

“The nation’s view” on a trade conflict has remained steady: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, the Chinese government declared it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on rare earths and further resources critical for cutting-edge industry.

The action was viewed as a significant step, as the state handles about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are employed in items such as solar panels and handheld devices.

The recent comments from the US and China are being interpreted by some as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of upcoming negotiations.

It is unclear whether a summit between Trump and Xi Jinping, planned at a conference in the Republic of Korea later this month, will take place as planned.
