Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
